The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) is currently engulfed in a deep crisis, with several prominent members resigning from its primary membership. The latest to step down are veteran actors Mallika Sukumaran and Lakshmipriya, further intensifying the turmoil within the prestigious film body. Their resignations follow closely on the heels of the previous day’s departure of Shweta Menon, who was the association’s first woman president.
Mallika Sukumaran explicitly stated her decision to step down was in solidarity with Shweta Menon. The crisis escalated after a stormy general body meeting held recently in Kochi, where a no-confidence motion was moved against the existing leadership. Accusations ranged from the failure to manage the day-to-day affairs of the organisation to an inability to resolve internal disputes. Lakshmipriya, who served as vice-president in the executive committee, also resigned, refuting allegations that the committee failed to present a proper financial statement, and suggesting some members arrived at the meeting with hidden agendas.
The collective resignation of the 17-member executive committee underscores the severity of the situation. Adding to the calls for change, actor Ansiba Hassan has vocalized the need for a completely new leadership within AMMA. She proposed a younger, empathetic generation of actors like Kunchacko Boban, Prithviraj, Asif Ali, and Dhyan Sreenivasan to take the helm. Hassan emphasized that the new committee must be able to listen to members' issues with genuine empathy and, significantly, take steps to re-integrate former members, including the survivor in the much-publicized actor assault case, back into the association's fold.
The unfolding events highlight a significant period of introspection and potential reform for AMMA, as stakeholders across the Malayalam film industry keenly watch for a resolution and the emergence of a leadership that can unify and represent all its members effectively.
