Vijay Holds First Puducherry Rally Since Karur Tragedy, Tight Security
TVK chief Vijay's Puducherry rally draws a controlled turnout of up to 5,000, with entry strictly through QR passes and heavy crowd management after the Karur stampede tragedy.
A large crowd gathered at Uppalam Expo Ground in Puducherry on Tuesday for TVK chief Vijay’s political rally, his first public meeting in the Union Territory since the Karur stampede tragedy in 2023. Police implemented strict safety measures, capping attendance at 5,000 and permitting entry only through QR code passes. A heavy security presence buffered the venue as officers worked to prevent any untoward incidents.
Security and border checks were tight, with authorities at the Mullodai border between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry screening Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam cadres traveling from the neighboring state before letting them enter the Union Territory. Vehicle inspections were conducted to ensure the crowd remained orderly. TVK cadres were reminded through a nine-point guideline to cooperate with police and conduct themselves responsibly.
Designated parking zones were established at Pondy Marina, the Old Port, and behind the Indira Gandhi Stadium, while roadside parking was banned to streamline traffic and reduce crowding. The police advisory explicitly prohibits entry for individuals without passes, as well as children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with health conditions. Residents from nearby districts in Tamil Nadu were urged not to travel solely for the rally.
TVK described the Puducherry gathering as a standalone event rather than a roadshow, with Vijay addressing supporters from the rooftop of his campaign bus. Video footage circulating of the crowd highlights strong support for the actor-turned-politician, even as officials emphasize safety and orderly conduct in the wake of the Karur tragedy.
