Nepo Babies in Hollywood: Why Authenticity Wins Over Manufactured Relatability
We unpack how nepo babies mix privilege with real skill—from Coppola to Kardashian to Jaden Smith—and why the relatability chase can make or break their careers.
Not All Nepo Babies Are Alike
There are a lot of nepo babies out there. From directors like Sofia Coppola to actors like Margaret Qualley and Dakota Johnson or just influencers like the Kardashians and Jaden Smith. The difference between all of them is… well, skill.
Some nepo babies are genuinely talented and work hard with the jumpstart they have received, acknowledging that they have received a jumpstart, while others are more entitled.
The Relatability Trap: Kardashians and Jaden Smith
The Kardashians, despite growing with wealth and privilege, try extra hard to be relatable to the public. Their reality show depicts their supposedly raw, unfiltered lives and it clearly shows how much more privileged they are.
Yet they persist by arguing that they put in the hard work and effort like anyone else to become who they are. We watch them anyway, giving them the views they need so they continue to put on the act.
Then there’s Jaden Smith. Is he talented? Sure. Certainly very entitled as well. We all know the meme, “Can we talk about the economic and political state of the world?”. Yep, and his cryptic tweets only further add to this.
He tries so hard to deny his nepotism but he doesn’t know how to be relatable. All he has is an idea of what could be relatable and then fails miserably at portraying that.
Authenticity Wins: Dakota Johnson, Margaret Qualley, Sofia Coppola & Zoë Kravitz
On the other hand, we have nepo babies like Dakota Johnson, Margaret Qualley, Sofia Coppola and Zoe Kravitz. All of them have acknowledged their nepo status and they keep it real. They are true to themselves and behave authentically on interviews and such.
This is received very well with the public. They don’t create a façade to be relatable. They don’t try to be relatable. They stay true to themselves regardless of perception. They talk about their privilege and even the difference challenges they face, which they are well aware is much different from the normal person.
If more nepo babies could be self-aware and down to earth, they could thrive in the industry instead of creating fake personas just to be accepted by the public.
