Hawaii's Big Island is bracing for what could be its first direct hurricane landfall in an astonishing 155 years as Tropical Storm Lala has now strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane. With maximum sustained winds reaching 75 mph (120 kph), Lala's eyewall is projected to pass over or near the southern end of the island by Saturday evening, threatening high-altitude volcanic slopes with its strongest winds.
Meteorologists are warning of significant risks, regardless of whether the eye makes direct landfall. Higher elevations near the Mauna Kea volcano could receive an astounding 25 inches (63.5 centimeters) of rain. This massive rainfall creates a life-threatening risk of mudslides, especially in mountainous areas where many residents live off the grid in improvised housing. Officials have issued urgent calls for individuals in vulnerable locations to seek safe shelter immediately.
Governor Josh Green described Lala as "an enormous storm," with tropical storm-force winds stretching outward up to 220 miles (350 km). Beyond the immediate threat of wind and rain, potential hazards across the island chain include heavy flooding and wind-driven wildfires. Mike Caputo, a 50-year-old local fire captain from Keaau on the east side of the Big Island, highlighted specific concerns: flash flooding and falling albizia trees, which are known for their large size but weak structure. "They can make roads impassable," Caputo noted, having already trimmed his own trees in preparation.
While the Big Island faces the most severe threat, effects are expected to reach Oahu and Kauai by Sunday morning, with tropical storm warnings also declared for Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. The entire state is on high alert as it navigates this historically significant weather event.
