LPG Hike: Pawar Warns Modi Govt of Political Price

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar has sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government over the recent increase in cooking gas and fuel prices, warning of political repercussions. Speaking on Sunday, Pawar stated that the price hikes are being implemented in a phased manner to avoid immediate public backlash, but are steadily impacting household budgets across the country.

The veteran politician, addressing presspersons in Baramati, highlighted that despite assurances from the Prime Minister to keep inflation in check, the reality is quite different. He asserted, "The ruling party will have to pay a political price for this at the right time." This stern warning comes in the wake of a ₹29 per cylinder increase in domestic cooking gas prices, marking the second such hike in just three months.

Maharashtra Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar echoed Pawar's sentiments, alleging that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears unconcerned about issues affecting ordinary citizens, a stark contrast to their vocal protests against fuel price hikes when they were in opposition during the Congress government's tenure. "During the Congress government, they used to raise voice on the price rise of fuels and gas but now they are maintaining silence," Wadettiwar remarked.

In response to the criticism, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi defended the price adjustment, stating that the LPG price hike is an inevitable consequence of a global crisis. Joshi attributed the increased costs to choked supply chains resulting from the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This explanation points to external factors as the primary driver behind the domestic price increases, offering a different perspective on the government's role.
