In a move that's catching eyes and sparking conversations, the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia, has rolled out an unusual incentive to encourage soldiers to re-enlist: a four-day pass to play "Grand Theft Auto VI" upon its highly anticipated release.
This unique offer is available to active-duty soldiers who sign a new reenlistment contract for a minimum of two years, and up to six years, between August 1 and November 14, 2026. The idea behind this creative incentive program, according to Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, was to connect with what soldiers are interested in and help meet fiscal year 2027 reenlistment goals.
The strategy appears to be working, at least initially. So far, 20 out of 130 eligible soldiers in Fort Stewart's 9th Brigade Engineering Battalion have already taken up the "GTA 6" perk and reenlisted. Lt. Col. Tomko emphasized that such reenlistment incentives are a routine part of the U.S. Army's efforts to reward its soldiers, citing previous unique ceremonies held in various interesting locations, from Italy to Tybee Island beaches.
"Grand Theft Auto VI," which has been in development for over a decade and is indisputably one of the most anticipated video games of the year, is set to release on November 19. Pre-orders for the game opened on June 25, with a standard edition priced at $79.99 and an "ultimate" version offering exclusive in-game content for $99.99.
This innovative approach highlights the evolving methods military branches are exploring to attract and retain personnel, leveraging popular culture and personal interests to motivate their service members.
