Jaishankar to visit Sri Lanka as PM Modi's envoy to assess cyclone recovery

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is traveling to Sri Lanka as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy to oversee follow-up work after the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah in November. In Colombo, he will meet Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and other leaders to review relief and reconstruction efforts.

The mission underscores India’s Neighbourhood First policy and comes within the framework of Operation Sagar Bandhu, which was launched to address the cyclone’s damage and accelerate relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding across affected areas.

Officials say the talks are likely to cover rapid housing and shelter provisions, rebuilding roads and critical infrastructure, restoring power, and supporting ports and fisheries to revive livelihoods. Long-term climate resilience and disaster preparedness will also be on the agenda as the region seeks to reduce vulnerability to future extreme weather events.

Observers view the visit as a signal of deeper bilateral cooperation and a demonstration of India’s willingness to shoulder regional responsibilities in the wake of natural disasters. The talks could set the tone for a broader roadmap on reconstruction and capacity-building in the coming months, aligning with both countries’ interests in stability and growth.
