Sadiq Khan Fined Over 'Scam' Car! 😱 City Hall Blames "Conveyor-Belt Justice"

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has found himself in a rather unusual predicament, receiving a fine for an untaxed car that his office vehemently insists he doesn't own. City Hall has labeled the incident a "scam" and highlighted concerns over the "conveyor-belt justice" system under which the conviction was made.

The 24-year-old Nissan Micra, reportedly not belonging to Khan or Transport for London, was deemed untaxed on January 24.

Consequently, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) initiated a prosecution, leading to Khan's conviction in his absence last month.

This occurred in a private hearing of the single justice procedure in Herefordshire, a system where magistrates can process hundreds of cases daily, often in less than a minute.

Khan's spokesperson stated, "This is a scam, which is a crime," adding that it's not the first time the Mayor has been targeted with false vehicle registrations. This comes amid ongoing protests from motorists angered by the expansion of London's ultra-low emission zone (Ulez), with some reportedly threatening to register cars in Khan's name to make him liable for charges.

The conviction resulted in a £220 fine, £85 in costs, and a £35.84 bill for the unpaid tax on the Micra. However, there's a developing twist: Khan's office reports that the DVLA has applied to reopen the case and is expected to withdraw the prosecution, indicating their awareness of the fraudulent activity.

The DVLA is anticipated to investigate these false registrations further, acknowledging the mayor's claim of being a victim in this strange automotive saga.
