Bengaluru techie shoots wife in broad daylight after divorce notice

A Bengaluru software engineer shot and killed his wife, a bank manager, on a busy Bengaluru road on Tuesday evening, shortly after she had served him a divorce notice. The 39-year-old woman, Bhuvaneshwari, was returning home from work when she was ambushed near Magadi Road around 6:30 pm.

The accused, 40-year-old Balamurugan, who worked as a software engineer in Whitefield, reportedly trailed his wife for months and allegedly opened fire with a pistol. He surrendered at the Magadi Road Police Station after the shooting.

Bhuvaneshwari, an Assistant Manager at the Union Bank of India's Basaveshwarnagar branch, was rushed to Shanbagh Hospital, but succumbed to injuries on arrival. The couple had been living separately for 18 months, and Bhuvaneshwari had moved to Rajajinagar six months ago to distance herself from her husband.

Investigators say the accused suspected an affair and opposed her legal separation. He had been monitoring her movements, moving to Cholurpalya four months ago after learning of her new residence. The divorce notice from Bhuvaneshwari preceded the fatal act. The police are continuing the investigation.

The city has been rattled by the incident, prompting calls for stronger protection for women and better policing in domestic cases.
