MP Panel to Probe Indore Water Tragedy and Accountability
A high-level Madhya Pradesh committee will review Indore's water crisis, identify causes, and hold staff accountable to prevent future tragedies.
The Madhya Pradesh government has formed a high-level investigation committee to probe the diarrhoea outbreak in Indore’s Bhagirathpura, caused by contaminated drinking water supplied by the Indore Municipal Corporation. The state-level panel will conduct a detailed review of the events surrounding the incident, determine accountability, and propose recommendations. The committee will submit its report to the government within a month and may include other matters deemed necessary or incidental to the investigation.
Chaired by Additional Chief Secretary, General Administration Department, Sanjay Kumar Shukla, the panel includes the Principal Secretary, Public Health Engineering, P. Narahari; and Commissioner, Directorate of Urban Administration and Development, Sanket Bhodve, with Indore Divisional Commissioner Sudam Khade designated as the member-secretary. The government says the panel will obtain necessary records, reports, and information from concerned departments, and may conduct site inspections if required.
The tragedy surfaced on December 29, 2025 and has impacted more than 3,000 people so far. Five new diarrhoea cases were detected in Indore; there is no clarity over the death audit report. Government doctors’ audit has pegged the death toll at 15, while local reports indicate at least 24 deaths have been linked to the outbreak.
The panel will examine the actual causes and relevant facts of the Bhagirathpura incident, analysing administrative, technical, and management shortcomings related to the crisis. It will determine the accountability of officers and employees responsible for the incident and provide necessary suggestions to prevent recurrence. The government said the committee may also include other matters incidental to the investigation and will report its findings and recommendations to the authorities within a month.
