In a crucial move to safeguard Chennai's ecological future, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss and party floor leader Sowmiya Anbumani spearheaded a signature campaign in Pondy Bazaar on Sunday. Their urgent call is directed at the State government, pressing for the official notification and robust protection of the Pallikaranai marshland, a lifeline for the city's water resources.
Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss didn't mince words during the campaign, openly criticizing former DMK minister P.K. Sekarbabu, who previously oversaw the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). Ramadoss accused Sekarbabu of failing to act as a crucial watchdog for real estate development in the state. He emphasized the dire need for Chief Minister Vijay to directly intervene, stating that the marshland must be properly demarcated and officially notified to prevent further degradation.
The PMK president highlighted alarming issues, including the daily dumping and burning of a staggering 5,000 tonnes of garbage in the marshland. He also pointed to alleged conspiracies involving construction companies instigating local residents to claim land titles, effectively aiding encroachment. Ramadoss asserted that official demarcation would nullify the need for protests, making encroachment impossible.
Echoing his concerns, Ms. Sowmiya Anbumani brought the critical aspect of Chennai's burgeoning water crisis to the forefront. With a population nearing ten million, Chennai struggles with water scarcity, despite being home to three rivers, none of which provide usable water. She lamented the loss of numerous lakes and ponds, many sacrificed for residential colonies built by the government itself.
Sowmiya passionately described the marshland as the city's essential "sponge," vital for absorbing rainwater and recharging groundwater reserves. Her message was clear: without the Pallikaranai marshland, groundwater availability would plummet, and South Chennai would inevitably become barren. The campaign serves as a stark warning, emphasizing that the city's taps will run dry if this crucial ecological asset is not protected immediately.
