Palaniswami: AIADMK Never Compromises on Farmers' Welfare, Slams DMK
AIADMK chief Palaniswami accuses DMK of anti-farmer policies, citing delayed paddy procurement, inadequate centers, and a protected delta agriculture zone.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami told reporters at Salem airport that the party has never compromised on farmers' welfare, whether in government or in opposition. He contrasted this with the DMK, accusing it of anti-farmer policies and pointing to a memorandum of understanding signed during Stalin's deputy chief ministership for methane extraction in the delta region. He emphasized that the AIADMK declared the delta a protected agriculture zone to shield farmers and land from reckless projects.
On the ground, Palaniswami claimed paddy procurement was delayed in the Kuruvai cycle, leading to weather-related losses. He cited farmers who said procurement centers did not buy grain for 15 days, and that the procured paddy was not sent to godowns because of a lack of manpower and transport, driven by non-payment of charges.
He argued that in four years under DMK rule, Kuruvai farmers were not included in crop insurance schemes. He recalled visits to the delta when he stood with farmers, contrasting with Stalin's reportedly distant approach. He asserted that the DMK's opaque decisions hurt farmers and that the AIADMK would continue to champion their interests.
Palaniswami also reminded listeners of earlier AIADMK measures such as compensation to affected farmers and the region's declared protected status, contrasting them with current government actions. The claim is that protecting the delta and ensuring timely procurement require renewed focus on logistics and farmer welfare.
