The UK is bracing for significant weather changes as the Met Office issues multiple yellow thunderstorm warnings across large parts of the country. Following weeks of extreme heat and a summer likely to be one of the hottest on record, forecasters are predicting heavy downpours and potential flash flooding. These warnings come into effect starting Wednesday, covering swathes of Northern England, Northern Ireland, and parts of Scotland.
The warnings highlight several potential disruptions for residents. Homes and businesses could face flooding, while travel services may experience significant delays. There's also a risk of power cuts as the severe weather rolls in. This stark contrast in weather patterns follows five heatwaves that have left 71.3 per cent of the country in drought, creating conditions ripe for flash flooding when heavy rain finally arrives.
Specific timings for these warnings vary by region. In Northern Ireland, the alert is active from noon until 11:59 pm on Wednesday. Parts of northeast Scotland are under a warning from 2 pm until 9 pm. For large areas of northern England, including major cities like Manchester, Liverpool, and Newcastle upon Tyne, the warning is in place from 7 pm on Wednesday through to 10 am on Thursday.
While "heavy pulses" of rain have already begun in some areas early on Wednesday, forecasters caution that these downpours are unlikely to resolve the extensive drought overnight. Met Office data indicates that up to 23mm of rain fell in parts of central southern Lancashire in the 12 hours leading up to 6 am on Wednesday, with Northern Ireland seeing up to 13mm and southwest England between 6-10mm.
Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern described Wednesday as a "very showery day" for the UK. He specifically noted that Northern Ireland and regions in western and central Scotland should expect "frequent showers with heavy downpours, hail and thunder." These cooler, wetter conditions mark a significant shift from the UK's fifth heatwave of the summer, which saw temperatures soar to 38.1C in Kew Gardens, London, making it the hottest day of the year. Despite the much-needed rain, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, advising the public to remain vigilant.
