Indians Return from Iran via Armenia, Azerbaijan: MEA Update
Nearly 900 Indian nationals are returning from Iran via Armenia and Azerbaijan as MEA reports progress amid regional tensions.
Nearly 882 Indian nationals, including students, business people, and pilgrims, have begun returning from Iran through Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Ministry of External Affairs said at a weekly briefing. A total of 772 are returning via Armenia, and 110 through Azerbaijan, with some already home and others still on their way. The group includes a large number of students, including girl students from Kashmir who are pursuing medical education in Iran. The MEA noted that some people did not register with the Indian Embassy, which had led to earlier uncertainty about how many were stranded and needed help.
The MEA's Control Room, set up on March 4, remains fully functional to support Indian nationals, with helplines at Indian embassies in the region operating 24x7 and the volume of calls and emails having reduced significantly.
The government advisory urged everyone to contact the Embassy before crossing the Azerbaijan border to facilitate cross-border movements and ensure assistance is available as they return.
There have been reports of difficulties crossing Azerbaijan’s land border, which is said to allow only a small daily quota of Indian nationals, contributing to coordination and timing challenges for those still trying to come home.
