India Cracks Down on Instagram: Meta Ordered to Remove Child Abuse Ads!
India's government issues stern notice to Meta, demanding immediate removal of child sexual abuse material from Instagram ads. A crucial step for online child safety.
The Indian government has issued a strong warning to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, concerning the presence of Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) in paid advertisements on the platform. This stern notice, delivered on Saturday evening (July 4, 2026), follows growing concerns about online child safety.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has explicitly ordered Instagram to immediately disable all advertisements and content that promote or facilitate access to CSEAM. Furthermore, MeitY has demanded a comprehensive explanation from Meta within seven days, highlighting the urgency and seriousness of the matter.
In a related development, the IT Ministry has also summoned Meta officials to address a recent report detailing the alarming proliferation of child sexual abuse material advertisements on Instagram. This action underscores the government's commitment to holding tech giants accountable for the content on their platforms and ensuring a safer digital environment for children.
IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw personally directed MeitY officials to engage with Meta regarding these concerning Instagram ads. This move comes amidst a broader global push for greater accountability from social media companies regarding their impact on young users, including a mention of Meta recently losing a bid to dismiss U.S. states’ claims alleging that Facebook and Instagram addict children.
