A four-storey building in Delhi's Saidulajab collapsed on Saturday evening, leaving one dead and several injured. Rescue operations are ongoing as families wait in agony.
A terrifying Saturday evening in South Delhi’s Saidulajab area turned into a scene of utter chaos and heartbreak when a four-storey building suddenly collapsed. Located near the Saket Metro Station, the building housed various coaching centers, corporate offices, a mess, and paying guest accommodation for students. The air was filled with screams and thick dust as the structure came crashing down, leaving several people trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue operations were launched immediately, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, and local police working tirelessly through the night. As of early Sunday morning, officials confirmed that nine people had been pulled from the debris. While eight survivors were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment, one man, identified as Ravi, was tragically declared dead on arrival. The search continues for others who might still be buried under the concrete.
Witnesses at the scene shared harrowing accounts of the incident. Residents and students who frequented the mess or attended classes in the building stood in shock near the entrance of the lane. Gaurav Kumar, a 23-year-old local student, spoke about his desperate search for a friend. 'I have been calling him for hours and he has not been picking up,' he said, noting that his friend often ate at the mess in the collapsed building. Other locals, like Ravindra Singh, estimated that between 100 and 150 people could have been inside when the disaster struck, given the various offices and cafes operating there.
Frustration and anger are brewing among the local community. Some residents claimed they had previously complained about the building's construction, describing it as risky. The structure was relatively new, having been built only four or five years ago. As the heavy machinery of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and civil defense units clears the debris, families remain gathered at the site, clinging to the hope of hearing some good news about their loved ones.
