Shivraj Patil, Former Lok Sabha Speaker, Dies at 90 in Latur

Shivraj Patil Chakurkar, a veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister, passed away on Friday in Maharashtra's Latur district after a brief illness. He was 90. Patil's career spanned five decades, during which he held a string of influential positions at the center, including Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996, a period marked by strong parliamentary proceedings and institutional developments.

Patil's ministerial journey began as Minister of State for Defence from 1980 to 1982, followed by a stint heading the Commerce Ministry from 1982 to 1983. During the Rajiv Gandhi government, he also took charge of Personnel, Defence Production, Civil Aviation and Tourism, underscoring his versatility across portfolios. His tenure as Speaker is noted for leveraging technology to disseminate information and broadcasting parliamentary proceedings, as well as overseeing the construction of the Parliament Library Building.

Born on October 12, 1935, in Latur's Chakur region, Patil started his political journey as the municipal council chief of Latur before rising to national prominence. His long career, marked by leadership roles and a continuous presence in Indian politics, reflected his ability to navigate complex policy and governance challenges.

Beyond the central government, Patil also served as Governor of Punjab and as Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015, illustrating a breadth of responsibilities that spanned both legislative and executive duties. His passing closes a chapter on a figure who touched multiple facets of India's political landscape over five decades.
