Ukrainian forces have launched one of their most significant drone attacks on Russia since the invasion began over four years ago, deploying nearly 800 unmanned aerial vehicles. This massive assault came just two days after a similar, though smaller, salvo, marking a clear escalation in the aerial conflict.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting 791 Ukrainian drones across various regions, including annexed Crimea, the Black and Azov seas, and specifically towards the Moscow region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that over 600 drones were aimed at the Moscow region, with 180 successfully shot down. While officials confirmed no fatalities or major damage within Moscow city, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported three injuries in the surrounding Moscow region.
This sweeping drone operation is part of Ukraine’s strategy to make the Russian public acutely aware of the war’s consequences, thereby increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in peace negotiations. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Putin for prolonging the conflict instead of accepting "realistic ceasefire proposals."
Meanwhile, the brutal reality of the war continues to unfold in Ukraine. A Russian missile strike tragically hit a village in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people and injuring eight others. The barrage devastated homes, adding to the relentless human cost of the ongoing conflict.
Analysts highlight that both warring nations are caught in an escalating exchange of long-range aerial strikes. Ground movements along the extensive 1,250-kilometer (780-mile) front line in eastern and southern Ukraine are increasingly hampered by the widespread use of drones and ground robots, forcing a shift towards more aerial engagements. Ukraine has notably advanced its domestically produced long-range drone technology, which has garnered international attention, enabling deeper strikes into Russian territory.
