Texas Faces Devastating Floods Again: 1 Dead, Camp Mystic's Tragic Past Recalled
Severe storms bring fresh heartbreak to Texas, as floods claim at least one life in areas still reeling from last year's deadly deluge. Stay informed on the unfolding disaster.
Texas is once again grappling with severe flooding, as heavy rains have swept through areas previously devastated by similar events. At least one fatality has been reported, as residents in places like Boerne battle rising waters and a tragic sense of déjà vu.
The relentless storms have dumped over 20 inches of rain in some parts of the state, turning streets into rivers and forcing evacuations. Carter Lopez, a 30-year-old Boerne resident, shared his harrowing experience with reporters, recounting how he helped pull people from the floodwaters near his apartment. His downstairs neighbors, he noted, found their home inundated with nearly four inches of water and sought shelter in his apartment.
Lopez commented that the current floods feel even worse than last year's event for Boerne, stating, "This is not something we could really prepare for." The area's vulnerability to extreme weather is underscored by the tragic history of nearby Kerr, home to Camp Mystic.
Just last year, on the 2025 Fourth of July holiday, Camp Mystic experienced an unimaginable disaster when the Guadalupe River rose an astounding 26 feet in approximately 45 minutes. That sudden, ferocious surge swept away 25 young campers, claiming their lives. The Christian summer camp, unable to recover from the tragedy, did not reopen this year and filed for bankruptcy earlier.
The current flooding serves as a grim reminder of the region's ongoing struggle with severe weather patterns. With more than 130 deaths attributed to last year's wider Texas floods, the community faces immense challenges in rebuilding and preparing for future climate impacts.
