A 26-year-old professional bodybuilder from Rohtak, Rohit Dhankhar, died after a late-night altercation at a wedding in Haryana’s Bhiwani district. He was beaten by a group armed with rods and hockey sticks and collapsed from his injuries before being rushed to PGIMS Rohtak, where he succumbed the following day. Dhankhar had accompanied a friend to the wedding when the attack occurred.
The clash began over a dispute about selfies at the venue. Those involved were asked to step aside to allow women to pass, a confrontation that escalated quickly. Dhankhar and his friend Jatin said the assailants intercepted them as they attempted to leave, smashed car windows, and blocked their path. The group then dragged Dhankhar from the vehicle and beat him mercilessly before fleeing.
Dhankhar’s family says the confrontation arose after he objected to improper language used by some youths regarding women at the wedding. A murder case has been registered, with four individuals named in the FIR and searches under way for others who participated in the assault. Police described the attackers as numbering more than a dozen, with some reports suggesting a higher figure.
Dhankhar was a para-athlete who represented India internationally in para powerlifting. His death has sparked discussion about safety at large gatherings and the treatment of women at public events. The investigation continues as authorities pursue those responsible for the violence.
