Ukraine power grid at zero after massive strikes
Ukraine faces widespread outages as drone and missile strikes cripple energy infrastructure, with power generation reduced to zero and repairs underway.
Ukraine faced what officials described as the war’s most challenging night, as a massive wave of drone and missile strikes knocked out much of the country’s energy infrastructure. Power generation dropped to zero at several facilities, leaving homes, hospitals and businesses in darkness as crews rushed to assess damage and begin repairs.
The national grid operator said facilities were completely knocked out and outages spread across multiple regions while restoration work continued. As repairs proceed, authorities warned that some areas could experience lengthy outages—potentially up to 16 hours a day—to allow crews to work safely and prevent further damage.
Kyiv’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged major buyers such as China and India to press Moscow to cease attacks on oil and gas infrastructure, signaling a heightened push for diplomatic and economic pressure to deter further disruption.
The strikes highlight the fragility of Ukraine’s energy system amid a harsh winter looming on the horizon. Energy officials said teams were mobilizing around the clock, prioritizing hospitals, shelters and critical facilities, while regional authorities coordinated to keep essential services running as best as possible.
Analysts say the incident could reshape international discussions on energy security and deterrence, as allies weigh how to deter attacks on civilian infrastructure. For residents, the immediate challenge is coping with rolling outages, heating constraints and the need to conserve fuel and resources while restoration work continues.
As the country grapples with outages, many households are turning to generators and community cooling or heating solutions, hoping for speedier restoration and clearer timelines from authorities.
