In Karnataka, the Governor’s office has asked for a full examination of the decision to shift from marks to grades for the third language in the SSLC exam, after a representation submitted by the Association for Preservation of Local Languages based in Bengaluru. The letter to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh requests a careful review of the recent move in light of broader educational objectives.\n\nThe representation argued that awarding only grades for the third language may diminish the subject’s academic importance and could affect student motivation, teachers, and parents, raising questions about long-term inclusiveness in the state’s schooling. The concerns reflect worries about maintaining rigorous language education while pursuing policy goals.\n\nThe shift to grading had been announced by the State’s School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, who described it as a measure to reduce the academic burden on children.
