A central Milan tram crash leaves two dead and dozens injured as investigators probe driver actions and track settings.
A tram derailed and crashed into a building in central Milan on Friday, killing two people and injuring 38 others. One of the dead was hit by the tram as it derailed while the second victim was a passenger, according to the city’s mayor. Firefighters wrapped shocked passengers in emergency blankets while ambulances carried the more seriously injured to hospital.
Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, confirmed the deaths and said investigators are looking into what happened, including whether a track switch was activated during the incident. The driver had reportedly run through the last stop on the line, and witnesses described the tram traveling at speed as it struck the building.
An initial investigation suggested the driver had not activated a track switch, and reports indicated the vehicle may have been moving quickly when it collided with the structure. One victim was Italian, in his 60s, and the other was a foreign national living in the city.
As rescue and medical teams worked at the scene, officials cautioned that it was too early to determine whether speed, human error, or a technical fault caused the derailment. The incident occurred as Milan, fresh from hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, was also staging Milan Fashion Week.
