Java Sea Tragedy: Ferry Overturns, 6 Dead & 130 Missing in Indonesia

A devastating incident has occurred in the Java Sea, where an Indonesian ferry carrying 243 passengers and crew overturned on Sunday. Authorities have confirmed six fatalities, while a massive search operation is underway for 130 people who remain missing. Rescuers have managed to bring 107 individuals to safety so far.

The vessel, identified as the Virgo Transport 8, was on its route from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when it encountered severe weather conditions. The captain reportedly issued a distress message, indicating rough seas with waves up to 3 meters and the ship listing, before all communication was lost.

The last known position of the ferry was in the Java Sea, approximately 148 kilometers from a pier in Banjarmasin.

The Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin promptly launched an emergency response after receiving reports of the communication failure around 2 AM local time on Sunday. Efforts are being coordinated with maritime authorities and other agencies, though challenging weather conditions are making the search difficult.
