Maldives Diving Tragedy: Last Two Bodies Recovered After Deadly Cave Mission

The search for five Italian divers who vanished in a deepwater cave in the Maldives has come to a somber conclusion. Authorities confirmed that the final two bodies have been recovered from the underwater cave network, bringing an end to the deadliest diving tragedy in the island nation's history. The incident began last week when the group entered a cave at the Devana Kandu site for what was intended to be an exploration mission.

The final victims brought to the surface were identified as 22-year-old Giorgia Sommacal and 31-year-old Muriel Oddenino. Their remains were located in the deepest section of the cave, roughly 60 meters down, by a specialized team of Finnish diving experts. The recovery effort was a massive undertaking, involving local police, military personnel, and international assistance to navigate the dangerous and deep underwater terrain.

The group was led by Monica Montefalcone, a 51-year-old professor and marine ecologist from the University of Genoa. Montefalcone was a regular in these waters and was accompanied by her daughter Giorgia, research fellow Federico Gualtieri, student Muriel Oddenino, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti. While the group had permits to research soft corals in the area, the university later clarified that the specific deep-cave dive where the accident occurred was not an official part of their scientific mission.

The tragedy also claimed the life of a local hero. Mohamed Mahudhy, a rescuer with the Maldivian National Defense Force, died from decompression complications over the weekend while attempting to locate the missing divers. His death led to a temporary suspension of the mission before the final recovery was completed. All victims have now been moved to the capital, Male, as officials and families grapple with the scale of this devastating loss.
