Odyssey, Backed by Amazon & GV, Secures $310M for AI World Models at $1.45B Valuation!
AI startup Odyssey, founded by self-driving pioneers, just raised $310M at a $1.45B valuation with Amazon and other major investors! Learn how their "world models" are revolutionizing AI beyond LLMs. #AIinnovation
Odyssey, an innovative AI startup making waves with its "world models," has successfully closed a massive $310 million Series B funding round. This significant investment now values the company at an impressive $1.45 billion, solidifying its status as a tech unicorn to watch. The round was spearheaded by Natural Capital, with notable participation from industry giants like Amazon, AMD Ventures, and GV (Google Ventures), among other big names.
At the core of Odyssey's groundbreaking work are its world models. These aren't your typical text- or chat-based large language models (LLMs). Instead, world models are designed to gather intricate data from the physical world, then simulate it with remarkable accuracy and realistic physics. They represent the next frontier in artificial intelligence, moving beyond just understanding language to simulating reality itself.
The startup's unique approach to data collection stems directly from the backgrounds of its visionary founders. CEO Oliver Cameron and CTO Jeff Hawke are veterans of the self-driving vehicle industry. Cameron co-founded Voyage, an autonomous vehicle startup acquired by GM's Cruise, where he later became a VP. Hawke was a key engineer at the UK self-driving firm Wayve. This expertise led Odyssey to mimic Google Earth's data gathering by sending individuals out with cameras strapped to their backs, collecting real-world environmental data to build their sophisticated models.
Established in 2023, Odyssey now offers a range of world models catering to various applications, from creating immersive video games to advancing robotics. The company has gained particular recognition for its ability to generate rich, interactive video content directly from text prompts. Adding a significant strategic alliance, Amazon's participation means AWS is now Odyssey's preferred cloud provider, and the startup plans to optimize its models to run on AWS’s Trainium chips, Amazon’s contender in the competitive AI chip market.
Beyond the venture capital firms, Odyssey has also attracted an stellar lineup of angel investors, including AI luminary Jeff Dean, prominent investor Elad Gil, GitHub CEO Garry Tan, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, and Cruise founder Kyle Vogt. With this latest injection of capital, Odyssey’s total funding to date now stands at an impressive $337 million, fueling its mission to redefine AI's capabilities.
