BHUBANESWAR: An 18-year-old first-year BTech Computer Science student at KIIT was found dead in his hostel room late Sunday. Infocity police say the death appears to be suicide, and it marks the third such incident on the KIIT campus this year, following the deaths of two Nepalese students in February and May that drew diplomatic attention from Nepal.
The deceased's mother, a resident of Raipur, has filed a complaint alleging that a girl from Chhattisgarh and her family harassed her son and contributed to his decision to take his life. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation, examining testimonies from hostel inmates, digital communications, and social media activity.
The room was found locked from inside when roommates returned around 10:30 pm; authorities opened it in the presence of officers. Initial findings point to suicide due to personal issues, and a suicide note reportedly recovered from the room is being considered as part of the investigation. Investigators say further evidence and statements will determine the exact circumstances and whether harassment played a role.
