From Security Camp to School: Abujhmad's Transformative Hostel
A former security camp in Chhattisgarh's Abujhmad, once a Naxal stronghold, now houses 150 tribal students! Discover this inspiring transformation promoting education & peace.
In a remarkable shift reflecting prevailing peace and new development priorities, a former security camp nestled in Chhattisgarh's Abujhmad region has been transformed into a vibrant hostel for tribal students. This pioneering initiative at Bhatpal village in Narayanpur district, a part of the wider Bastar division, marks a significant step towards empowering the local community through education.
For approximately 15 years, the camp, located about 25 km from the district headquarters, served as a crucial base for security forces. Its presence underscored the region's long struggle with Naxal insurgency. However, with improved security conditions and the Naxal menace officially declared free in Chhattisgarh on March 31 this year, the district administration saw an opportunity to repurpose the infrastructure for a brighter future.
Under the proactive leadership of Narayanpur Collector Namrata Jain, the vacant premises were recently opened as a hostel.
The facility now provides safe accommodation and an environment conducive to learning for children from remote and often inaccessible villages.
Currently, two separate facilities for Scheduled Tribe students are operational within the premises.
The pre-matric ST boys' hostel, designed for students from Class 6 to 10, has a sanctioned capacity of 100 but is already home to 114 eager learners. Additionally, a post-matric ST boys' hostel, with a sanctioned strength of 50 students from Class 11 and 12, currently accommodates 39. This expansion of educational support also meets the residential needs of students connected with the Education City at Kutul.
The post-matric hostel is particularly impactful. Previously, students completing Class 10 often faced the burden of finding private accommodation near their schools, adding significant financial strain on their families. The new hostel resolves this, along with other logistical challenges like long travel distances and transportation issues, especially for those from distant villages.
The government higher secondary school in Bhatpal is conveniently located just 50 metres away, making daily commutes effortless. This initiative is designed not just to provide schooling but to encourage continuous education, helping students from pre-matric to post-matric levels to pursue higher studies without dropping out due to logistical hurdles.
Students like Ritesh Soni, a Class 9 student from Halamimunjmeta village, express immense happiness with the safe environment and the chance to study alongside peers. Komendra, a Class 12 student who once had to arrange private accommodation 20 km from his village, now enjoys safe and organized living, easing his family's financial worries.
Collector Jain herself conducted a surprise inspection, reviewing facilities, food, cleanliness, and interacting with students to understand their needs.
The transformation of the Bhatpal campus symbolizes a broader shift in Narayanpur's development priorities, where efforts to enhance education, healthcare, roads, livelihoods, and other basic services are gaining momentum alongside improved security.
This successful repurposing of infrastructure for security into a hub of educational opportunity truly illustrates a new era for a region once synonymous with Naxal violence.
