Saharanpur Mosque Demolished Amidst Political Tensions & MP House Arrest!

Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, A mosque located within the District Magistrate’s office complex in Saharanpur was demolished by local authorities on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The action followed an order from the Court of the City Magistrate, which had declared the structure illegal last month.

The demolition was carried out under heavy police presence, with the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and the City Magistrate overseeing the operation.

This move has ignited significant political controversy and communal tension in the region.

Adding to the escalating situation, Lok Sabha MP Iqra Hasan, who represents Kairana and was scheduled to visit Saharanpur on the same day, was placed under house arrest. The MP reported that a large police force arrived at her residence, preventing her from leaving her home to travel to the demolition site.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) has vehemently condemned the incident, alleging that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is deliberately attempting to “stoke unrest in the State along communal lines before the 2027 Assembly polls.” Afzal Ansari, a senior SP leader and Lok Sabha MP from Ghazipur, criticized the government's actions, stating, “Iqra Hasan is an MP from our party, and we have received information that she has been placed under house arrest along with the local MLA and others.

The BJP is completely trampling constitutional rights.

There can be no greater threat to democracy than placing an MP under house arrest.”

Mr. Ansari further denounced the demolition step as undemocratic, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of public representatives to engage with the public and resolve issues on the ground.

Muslim bodies have also come forward to denounce the demolitions of religious structures, calling for legal remedies.

The incident underscores the heightened political sensitivities and communal divisions as Uttar Pradesh approaches its next Assembly elections.
