Indonesia Ferry Fire Horror: 5 Dead, 41 Missing After Blaze At Sea
A devastating ferry fire off Indonesia has left five dead and 41 people missing. Rescuers are battling challenging conditions. Stay updated on this unfolding maritime tragedy.
A catastrophic ferry fire erupted at sea on Sunday, resulting in five confirmed fatalities and leaving 41 individuals missing. The tragic incident occurred off Indonesia, during a voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi. Authorities report that 225 people have been successfully rescued from the vessel.
The regional Surabaya Search and Rescue Agency provided the latest figures, detailing the extensive efforts underway. Some passengers, in a desperate attempt to escape the inferno, reportedly jumped overboard and were subsequently picked up by a nearby ship. However, the situation remains perilous, with four other vessels unable to directly approach the burning ferry due to the significant risk posed by flammable materials on board.
According to Basarnas, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, the ferry captain had managed to contact the ferry company to report the fire. Disturbingly, there has been no further contact from the captain since that initial report. A larger-scale rescue operation is currently en route from Surabaya, facing a six-hour journey to reach the disaster site.
Muhammad Masyhud, a senior official at the Ministry of Transportation, emphasized that the "safety of passengers and crew is our top priority." He assured ongoing coordination with all relevant parties to ensure a swift, safe, and effective evacuation process.
This incident tragically highlights the persistent issue of marine accidents in Indonesia. As an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, the nation frequently experiences such events, often attributed to lax safety standards and unpredictable weather patterns. Just last month, another ferry carrying more than 70 people sank near Selayar, resulting in four deaths and 14 missing.
