NVIDIA is investing $2 billion in chip-design software maker Synopsys as part of an expanded multi-year partnership to co-create new AI tools for product design across industries using NVIDIA’s AI technology. The deal, announced as part of a broader push by NVIDIA into AI investments, aligns with its recent moves in OpenAI and Anthropic and aims to shift heavy workloads away from traditional CPUs toward NVIDIA GPUs. Engineers regularly use Synopsys software to design everything from computer chips to jet engines, running virtual simulations that can take weeks to complete. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said the collaboration could deliver an order-of-magnitude speed-up, unlocking opportunities that were previously impossible.
The agreement is non-exclusive, and Synopsys technically remains open to working with other chipmakers. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi stressed that the $2 billion from NVIDIA is not a mandate to buy NVIDIA GPUs, but rather a strategic option that enhances Synopsys’ ability to adapt its software for NVIDIA hardware while maintaining normal business relationships with other customers. The partnership reflects a broader industry trend: accelerated computing and AI-centric design tools are becoming central to how high-tech products are created, from silicon to aerospace.
As industry players expand their AI toolchains, the collaboration could speed up time-to-market for complex designs and enable more rapid prototyping. The deal highlights NVIDIA’s ongoing effort to cement its role as a core technology supplier in AI ecosystems, while Synopsys gains a stronger optioning framework as it modernizes its software to run efficiently on NVIDIA’s platform. The executives emphasized that the collaboration will serve multiple sectors, accelerating AI adoption by reducing design cycles and enabling more sophisticated simulations before manufacturing.
