Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Angmo, recently raised questions about the "heavy deployment" of police personnel at Medanta hospital. Her concerns come after Wangchuk, the renowned education reformist, shared a video where he questioned if he still needed a "character certificate" after enduring a 26-day hunger strike, following allegations of a "deal" with the government.
The video, posted on his YouTube channel, is a 22-minute account where Wangchuk detailed alleged ill-treatment, including police occupation at Safdarjung Hospital and their refusal to let him leave, despite a High Court order granting him permission to move to a private facility of his choice. A particularly dramatic clip in the video shows Wangchuk attempting to leave Safdarjung Hospital but being physically denied exit by police officers stationed on the hospital floor.
The confrontation escalated as Wangchuk lay on the ground, refusing to move. He can be heard angrily stating, "Arrest me. Why are you forcing... people, this is torture. Now arrest me if you want, you understand? Arrest me, arrest me. You can stop me wherever, let the nation know how." The footage, recorded by an aide from his team, captures police officers attempting to chase him down the hospital corridor. Wangchuk pointed out, "It is digitally everywhere. The world knows except you. The world knows," referring to the Delhi High Court order that allowed his transfer to Medanta Hospital.
In his YouTube video, Wangchuk also addressed inquiries regarding his decision to drop the demand for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation and the manner in which he broke his fast. He explained that he feared a violent government crackdown, similar to what was witnessed in Ladakh during his previous hunger strike. His primary focus, he emphasized, was to ensure legal impunity for all students participating in peaceful protests.
Regarding the video, officials have clarified that the incident shown was recorded at Safdarjung Hospital on July 21, the same day the High Court order was issued, allowing him to be moved.
