An ultra-rare 1938 copy of Action Comics No. 1, the issue that introduced Superman to the world, has changed hands in a private sale for $15 million, a new record in rare comics.
Fewer than 100 copies are believed to exist, and this particular copy was graded 9.0 out of 10 by the CGC, boosting its desirability among collectors.
The sale was arranged by New York–based brokerages Metropolis Collectibles and Comic Connect, with both the seller and the buyer choosing to remain anonymous.
The copy's storied history—stolen from a Hollywood star's home in 2000 and recovered in 2011—helped propel its value, with the seller having paid about $150,000 in 1996. The theft’s notoriety inadvertently propelled Nicolas Cage into comic-collecting lore.
While private sales remain a relatively tight circle, this deal underscores a growing market for iconic comics as investments, eclipsing previous records such as the $9.12 million No. 1 sale last year. The revived interest in Action Comics No. 1 cements Superman's debut as a defining moment in pop culture.
