Adani & IHC Unveil Massive $11.5B Aluminium Project in Odisha!
Adani Group, in partnership with UAE's IHC, is set to invest a colossal $11.5 billion in an Odisha aluminium project. This venture leverages Adani's low-cost energy and aims to meet India's surging demand for the metal.
The Adani Group is making a significant entry into India's aluminium sector through a joint venture with UAE’s International Holding Company (IHC), committing a staggering $11.5 billion (₹1.08 lakh crore) to an integrated aluminium project in Odisha.
Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) and Adani Cement, highlighted the strategic rationale behind this ambitious undertaking. He emphasized two primary drivers: the Group’s competitive advantage in low-cost energy production and the anticipated surge in demand for aluminium within India. "It's a very energy intensive business and it works in the advantage of the group because we are one of the lowest producers of energy," Adani stated, underscoring the critical role of their energy capabilities.
The Adani Group foresees a substantial increase in aluminium demand driven by India's ongoing digitization and manufacturing growth. "As manufacturing in the country increases, the demand of aluminium is going to go up. And we see that as a big opportunity, long-term opportunity for the country," Adani explained, signaling a long-term vision for the sector.
Addressing concerns about entering an already competitive market dominated by major players like Nalco, Hindalco, and Vedanta, Adani pointed to India’s continued reliance on aluminium imports despite existing large capacities. "This is a sign that there is more demand. And there is going to be enough room for everybody to be in this market," he asserted. He expressed confidence that with competitive operations, India could eventually become a net exporter of aluminium.
The project, with 50% of the cost borne by Adani Enterprises and the remaining 50% by IHC, is positioned not to compete, but to bridge the gap between India’s current and future aluminium requirements. This strategic investment aims to bolster domestic production, support industrial growth, and contribute significantly to the state of Odisha's economic landscape.
