Friends mourn Catherine O’Hara as Eugene Levy honors her decades of laughter, from SCTV to Schitt’s Creek.
Eugene Levy paid tribute to his longtime friend and co-star Catherine O’Hara following news of her passing Friday. “Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today. I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years,” Levy said in a statement. “From our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the movies we did with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years on Schitt’s Creek, I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. And I will miss her.” My heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke, and the entire O’Hara family.
O’Hara’s career spanned stage and screen, from the venerable Second City troupe to the beloved SCTV sketch show, and later to Christopher Guest mockumentaries like Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind, where she and Levy played the terrier-owning duo Mickey & Mitch. Nearly a decade after their last Guest collaboration, the pair reunited for Schitt’s Creek, delivering the warm, sometimes chaotic energy that helped define the show. Both O’Hara and Levy would win Golden Globes for their roles as Moira and Johnny Rose, cementing their place in comedy history.
Levy’s son Dan, who played the Roses’ son David on Schitt’s Creek, remembered his TV mom as “a gift to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years.” Fans and colleagues alike continue to celebrate her vast influence on comedy and television, a legacy that will endure far beyond her years on screen.
