Just walked out of Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights and I am actually shaking with rage. It’s not just the BDSM scenes that make no narrative sense or the Charli XCX needle drop during a funeral. It is the absolute erasure of Heathcliff’s race. Brontë wrote him as a dark-skinned outsider - ‘Lascar’ or ‘Gypsy’ - because his racial otherness drives the ENTIRE plot of his exclusion. Casting Jacob Elordi just turns it into a generic rich white people toxic romance. This isn’t ‘subversive’ or ‘female gaze,’ it’s just lazy, aesthetic gentrification of a literary masterpiece. 0 5 stars. #WutheringHeights #FilmTwitter
