CBS is officially shaking up the late-night landscape in a massive way. It’s been confirmed that the Late Show franchise is being completely shuttered as Stephen Colbert’s run ends this May. Instead of finding a new host, the network is moving Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen into the iconic 11:35 p.m. time slot starting May 22nd. We’re looking at a full two-hour comedy block with back-to-back episodes of Comics Unleashed followed by the game show Funny You Should Ask at 12:37 a.m. This is a huge pivot from the traditional monologue-and-interview format we’ve seen for decades. While CBS cites financial reasons for the change, it feels like the end of an era for prestige late-night TV. Is this a smart move to bring raw stand-up back to the forefront, or is the network just waving the white flag on original late-night programming?
