In business, the worst thing you can do is overpromise just to close a deal. We’ve all been tempted in the heat of a sales pitch to say 'yes' when the answer should be 'no.' But when you break a promise, the reverberations are massive. You erode trust, lose loyal clients, and risk getting publicly knocked down on Yelp or Google reviews.
Even worse, it destroys your internal culture. When your staff sees leadership making empty promises and failing to deliver, they adopt the same bad habits. Honesty and realistic expectations build a best-in-class operation.
It is always better to under-promise and over-deliver. If a mistake happens, own it quickly, fix it, and communicate openly. A short-term win isn't worth a long-term reputation disaster.
