The idea that being first in AI guarantees success is a myth. History shows us that practical application and widespread adoption (diffusion) are what truly matter. Think about electricity: Britain invented the turbine, but the US led in bringing power to everyone.
The real AI 'race' isn't about who builds the fanciest model first, but who can integrate it into society effectively and safely, boosting productivity for all. Rushing ahead without considering public trust or safety, like with nuclear power setbacks, could actually hinder progress. Maybe prioritizing 'pacing the frontier' for safety isn't a weakness, but the smartest strategy to actually 'win' long-term prosperity.
