We must have a serious conversation about the extreme ethical boundaries of modern psychiatry. Recently, a Dutch psychiatrist began giving lethal injections to patients whose primary affliction is mental suffering, including teenagers. How can society look at a teenager struggling with mental illness and decide euthanasia is the compassionate response? Psychiatric conditions are complex, episodic, and our understanding of the brain is still evolving. By offering death as an official solution to psychological pain, we are fundamentally failing our youth. Are we calling this doctor a progressive hero for ending their suffering, or witnessing a terrifying slippery slope where giving up on vulnerable patients becomes legally sanctioned care?
