Nathan Fillion just dropped the bombshell at Awesome Con that a Firefly animated spinoff is actually in advanced development! Mal Reynolds is back, and the whole original crew—Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, the works—are officially returning to voice their characters. It’s being handled by Fillion’s company Collision33 and 20th Television Animation. After decades of rewatching the same 14 episodes and the Serenity movie, we might finally see what happens next in the Verse. Fillion is asking us to blow this up to show the networks the 'quantifiable analytics' are there. Honestly, Firefly fans are the most dedicated in history. I’m cautious because we’ve been burned before, but seeing the whole cast on board for an animated series feels like the perfect way to bring the magic back without worrying about everyone aging out of their roles. I'll believe it when I see a trailer. We've been hurt too many times. Plus, an animated series? I hope the art style doesn't ruin the gritty space-western vibe. Still, having the OG cast back is a huge win. Please don't mess this up! #sci-fi

Animated is the only way to go at this point. They can't exactly look like they did in 2002. My only concern is the writing. If the dialogue isn't as snappy as the original, it's going to feel like high-quality fan fiction.

It makes sense for 20th Television Animation to do this. Animated reboots are easier to schedule with busy actors like Fillion and Baccarin. It’s smart business, but I hope they keep the 'space western' soul alive. #sci-fi
