The authorities are blaming the 'non-availability of assistant engineers' due to routine transfers, especially around the Palluruthy region. But this bureaucratic excuse puts little children at severe risk. Just recently, a live cobra was found inside an almirah at a Karumaloor anganwadi because a window pane was missing and the building is surrounded by paddy fields. They have patched the window now, but this highlights a massive infrastructural crisis. Around 600 anganwadis here do not even have their own buildings. Because the government mandates a uniform rent for both rural and urban areas, finding a safe rented building in a major urban hub like Kochi is next to impossible. So our kids are forced into cheap, unsafe buildings with dense overgrowth and structural hazards.
