A deeply disturbing trend is emerging in psychiatry, exemplified by a Dutch doctor who has administered lethal injections to patients whose primary affliction is mental suffering. What is even more alarming is that some of these patients were merely teenagers. Mental illness is incredibly painful, but treating psychological anguish with state-sanctioned death crosses a terrifying ethical line. Adolescents, whose brains and emotional resilience are still developing, are exceptionally vulnerable. Can we really say a severely depressed teen has the capacity to make a permanent, irreversible decision to end their life? Some call this compassionate care and label doctors who do this as heroes ending unbearable pain, but to me, it looks like a catastrophic failure of the psychiatric system.
