India and China Progress Toward Peace: Key Border Talks Held in Beijing
India and China review LAC peace at the latest WMCC meeting in Beijing. Discover how both nations are working toward normalizing ties and maintaining border stability.
India and China have taken another significant step toward mending their relationship during a high-level meeting in Beijing. The 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) saw both nations expressing satisfaction with the current peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The discussions were described as constructive and forward-looking. Both sides acknowledged that the progress made in maintaining peace in border areas is the foundation for the gradual normalization of bilateral relations. This is a positive shift following the 2020 military standoff in the Ladakh sector, which had pushed relations to their lowest point in decades.
During the talks, officials touched upon several critical issues including border management, delimitation, and building better mechanisms for cross-border cooperation. Interestingly, the Indian delegation also pushed for an early meeting regarding trans-border rivers, a key environmental and geopolitical concern for the region.
Looking ahead, both New Delhi and Beijing are preparing for the next round of talks between their Special Representatives. By maintaining regular contact at both diplomatic and military levels, the two neighbors aim to ensure that the understanding reached in late 2024—which saw troops withdraw from friction points—remains steady. It seems the road to normalization is finally being paved with consistent dialogue.
