Chennai Colleges Join Fight Against Dengue: GCC Issues Prevention Directives
Greater Chennai Corporation rallied 112 colleges to tackle dengue. Learn how institutions are preventing outbreaks & protecting students in this vital public health effort.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is stepping up its efforts to combat dengue fever, recently holding a crucial review meeting with 112 colleges and higher educational institutions. Chaired by Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, the videoconference, held at the Ripon Buildings, focused on implementing robust measures to prevent dengue and other fevers from spreading within campuses.
Institutions received clear and urgent instructions to eliminate potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. This includes meticulously removing unwanted materials and ensuring there's no water stagnation in areas like discarded tyres, flower pots, roof gutters, and construction sites. These spots are notorious for collecting water, making them ideal for mosquito larvae.
Beyond environmental control, the GCC emphasized proactive health monitoring.
Colleges were directed to closely track student absences and immediately report any fever cases to the Corporation. This quick reporting is vital for timely intervention and to prevent further transmission.
Coordination with local health officials was also highlighted as essential for an effective response.
Students experiencing fever were strongly advised to seek immediate medical attention and consume plenty of fluids.
Crucially, they were asked to avoid attending classes until they had fully recovered, minimizing the risk of spreading illness to their peers.
This multi-pronged approach aims to safeguard the health of the student community and the wider public.
