Manipur BJP MLA Valte in critical condition after 2023 mob attack

Vungzagin Valte, a prominent Kuki-Zo BJP MLA from Thanlon in Pherzawl district, was brutally attacked by a mob in Imphal on May 4, 2023, as Manipur spiralled into ethnic violence. He has been in critical condition since the assault, repeatedly moved between facilities as doctors battle to save him.
A government official said he is on a ventilator after posts claiming his death on X were deleted. Valte was initially airlifted to Delhi after the 2023 attack and underwent extensive treatment for over a year before returning to Manipur in April last year.
Recently, his health took a turn for the worse, and he was moved to Delhi for admission to a Gurugram hospital for advanced care.
Valte, a three-time MLA and former minister, represented Thanlon and has been a central figure in Manipur's Kuki-Zo leadership. The case highlights the long shadow of the 2023 violence and the ongoing political tensions in the state.
