Maharashtra tops crimes against children with 24,171 cases in 2024
NCRB 2024 data shows Maharashtra leading in crimes against children, with ripple effects across cybercrime and women’s crime statistics.
Maharashtra recorded the highest number of cases registered under crimes against children in 2024, tallying 24,171 cases, according to the NCRB Crime in India 2024 report. The figure marks the state as the leading contributor in this crime category nationwide.
On crimes against women, Mumbai reported 6,358 cases, while Delhi topped the country with 66,398 cases. Maharashtra stood second with 47,954 cases, highlighting a regional pattern in reporting and enforcement.
Cybercrime is also on the rise in Maharashtra. The state saw 9,922 cybercrime cases in 2024, up from 8,103 in 2023. In Mumbai, 4,939 cybercrime cases were recorded, while Bengaluru (Bangalore) led the country with 17,561 cases. The state also reported 403 cyber stalking and 2,827 cyber fraud cases.
Nearly 27,981 cases have been pending investigation since 2023-24.
Under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the Anti-Corruption Bureau logged 721 cases in 2024, down from 812 the year before.
In economic offences, Maharashtra accounted for 20,083 cases, with Mumbai recording 7,771. Telangana and Rajasthan reported higher totals at 39,127 and 27,637 respectively.
The NCRB notes that increases in reported cases can reflect greater reporting and data capture as much as an actual rise in crime, underscoring ongoing challenges in protection and enforcement.
