This comprehensive operation was launched in direct response to a concerning surge in militant attacks targeting police and security forces across Pakistan. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar took to social media to state that the country's latest efforts are aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region. The Pakistani government has frequently attributed much of the recent violence to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its allied militant factions.
The timing of this operation is particularly noteworthy, coming just one day after a brazen attack on the regional headquarters of the paramilitary Rangers in the bustling southern port city of Karachi. Militants, armed with guns and explosives, stormed the facility, leading to the tragic deaths of three soldiers. Security forces successfully neutralized three attackers and apprehended another, identified by the military as an injured Afghan national. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban, swiftly claimed responsibility for the Karachi assault.
Minister Tarar clarified that the cross-border operation specifically targeted the hideouts and safe havens of the Pakistani Taliban. It's important to distinguish between the Pakistani Taliban and the Afghan Taliban; while separate entities, they maintain an allied relationship, with the Afghan Taliban having regained control in Afghanistan in 2021.
These recent military actions, including previous airstrikes less than three weeks ago, are anticipated to further escalate the already strained diplomatic relations between Islamabad and Kabul.
