Jadavpur University Erupts: ABVP & SFI Clashes Ignite Campus Fury!
Tensions skyrocket at Jadavpur University as ABVP and Left-backed student groups clash for a second day. See how campus politics spirals into violence and protest.
Jadavpur University in Kolkata has been gripped by intense unrest since Wednesday evening, August 19, 2026, as violent clashes erupted between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed student unions, including the Students Federation of India (SFI). The university, often seen as a stronghold of Left politics in West Bengal, has become a flashpoint for escalating political tensions, especially after the BJP"s recent rise to power in the state.
The initial confrontation on Wednesday night saw ABVP supporters, reportedly armed with lathis and sticks, storming the campus. They allegedly tore down and set fire to posters of Left student unions, accusing their members of earlier assaults. This act fueled further animosity and set the stage for continued unrest.
By Thursday, August 20, the situation escalated with both factions organizing rallies both inside and outside the university premises. Police deployed barricades in an attempt to prevent direct clashes, but the atmosphere remained highly charged. Around 2 PM, a group of ABVP workers attempted to force their way into the campus through Gate Number 4. This attempt was met with resistance from SFI students who had locked the gate.
The confrontation turned chaotic as ABVP supporters scaled the entrance gate, reportedly throwing bottles, eggs, sticks, and stones at those inside. Slogans were shouted, and flags were waved by both sides, signaling a complete breakdown of order. During the melee, a student from the university"s Bengali department sustained injuries while trying to exit through Gate 4. Additionally, ABVP supporters vandalized a university emblem installed at the gate, apparently in an effort to break the lock and gain entry.
Following the immediate easing of the situation, Left student unions like SFI and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students" Union (FETSU) gathered at the administrative building, Aurobindo Bhaban, seeking an audience with the Vice Chancellor to address the ongoing crisis. A Jadavpur BJP MLA has further inflamed tensions by stating that "naxals, maoists and anti-nationals" would not be permitted to perpetuate their ideologies within the university, indicating the broader political stakes involved in these campus clashes. Both groups have announced further protests, suggesting the conflict is far from over.
