The situation turned grim along the Kamvari river near Mumbai, where two boys have tragically been swept away by strong currents within a 24-hour period. On Sunday, a 17-year-old boy drowned after being caught in the swollen river's powerful flow, highlighting the extreme danger posed by the current weather conditions.
Commuters between the two major cities, Mumbai and Pune, have faced severe challenges. The vital Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old highway have been completely suspended due to flooding and landslides. A concrete pillar falling onto the carriageway further exacerbated the closure of the Expressway, leaving thousands stranded and causing immense traffic snarls. Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors.
The impact extends beyond infrastructure. Recognizing the escalating risks, authorities have declared a holiday for government, private, and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar districts. This decision aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amidst the hazardous weather.
In Pune's Maval Taluka, the severity of the rainfall prompted a landslip, necessitating the deployment of a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team. Rescue operations are underway as heavy rainfall continues to lash the district for several days, raising concerns about further incidents. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution and follow local advisories as the monsoon fury continues.
